Position Summary: This is a position that responds to Interlochen’s interest in sustainability and farm-to-school agriculture. The sustainability farm manager will focus on leading school initiatives with regard to sustainable practices, oversee garden production and food distribution, and manage the school’s botanical lab and garden space. The farm manager will be responsible for working with staff within the department, academy and outreach students, and site visitors and volunteers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage garden and botanical lab production and food distribution
  • Oversee community service students and volunteers
  • Ensure documentation of data within the department are being recorded for quantitative and qualitative research purposes
  • Maintain Certified Naturally Grown certification for ICA
  • Extend educational outreach opportunities in the community and local school districts
  • Serve the ICA and local community local garden expert resource
  • Co-teach agricultural science course to IAA students
  • Sit on Green Team for ICA
  • Work with advancement to secure continued grant funding for projects and development of future goals
  • Support ICA’s CSA program offering
  • Engage in community connections in sustainability, agriculture and food access
  • Orchestrate the Sustainability Lecture Series of guest speakers, and other public classes and events hosted by ICA
  • Stay up to date on latest farm production and agricultural science research and methods
  • Present ICA’s sustainability initiatives, as applicable, at conferences and opportunities 
  • Seeks the best use of materials, equipment and staff to maximize efficiency and effectiveness
  • Complies with ICA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of ICA finances
  • Respects the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community
  • Prioritizes duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of soil health, soil fertility, pest pressure
  • Experience with organic farming and/or organic gardening
  • Knowledge of growth cycle from seedling to transplant 
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting
  • Ability to engage with volunteers, students, and the local community 
  • Must meet and maintain background screening requirements for as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving)
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Experience educating and/or presenting (any age group)
  • Previous experience managing volunteers and/or staff
  • Master Gardner certification or equivalent experience 

Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work outdoors and in a greenhouse. Ability to walk, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 50 lbs); to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation, and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
